The last group of paintings I was experimenting with watercolor as an underpainting medium. It worked fairly well to a point. Once it was built up and began to lift it was no long suitable. I tried making an acrylic gouache by mixing transparent watercolor with acrylic gesso. I got a paint that felt more like watercolor off the brush but didn't lift. This is probably the best paint for underpainting that I have used. I also think I've found a new way to make panels for painting. Any time wood is used warping can be an issue. There are different ways to cope with the problem. The panel I've been experimenting with begins with a stiff foam insulation panel I get at Home Depot. I glue 1/8" hardboard to it using construction adhesive and then gesso the hardboard. The panel is light weight and totally flat. I need to experiment with it more but it has potential.
